Capitol Reef

Capitol Reef is one of my favorite spots in southern Utah.  We don’t always make it there because it is another hour or two south of my grandparents’ place, and when you’ve already driven 15 hours, you don’t always feel like going further!  This year we decided to venture down there since Garth and a couple of my sisters-in-law had never been.  The red rock formations are breathtaking.  Of course the pictures never do it justice, but I took some anyway.

Grandpa packed all the kids (plus some moms) in the back of his truck and drove us through a canyon.  It was incredible!  It was such a good way to see lots of the park without making all the little kids walk miles and miles.  We managed about a mile hike then we were back in the truck for quicker sight-seeing.

The younger three loved having Garth put them up inside the holes in the rocks!  Carter, not so much.

Taco Time

Carter was really hoping he would get the chance to work at Taco Time a little while we were in Richfield.  My Grandma was so kind to order him a hat and t-shirt so he would fit in!  He started working by wiping down tables and taking food out the drive through window.  He did really well and worked four hours the first day.  Then he begged and begged to go back the next day.  I hesitated because I didn’t want him to be a nuisance but around 12:00, the manager Sharon called and said they needed his help and when could I bring him in?  Six hours later we came to pick him up and he had progressed from bus boy to wearing a head set and taking orders from the drive through!  This is probably the most enthusiastic he has ever been about any kind of work.  It was really fun to watch him do it and succeed!

It appears, though, that he is not the youngest Taco Time worker in the family. . .

Mills Brothers Dairy Farm

My Uncle Matt and his brothers own a dairy farm in Monroe, Utah.  They have about 800 head of cattle and sell their milk to Darigold for making yogurt.  My kids had never seen it, so we took a field trip out there.

The girls loved the babies.  These babies had just been born that morning!

He took us inside and showed us the milking operation.  We got to watch the cows come in, get hooked up, the milking and exit.  It was a well run operation and happens all day long.

Matt decided to show Derek (and the rest of us city folk) how to milk a cow the “traditional way." The lesson ended when Derek got squirted in the face by mom!

Jeeping

I have super cool grandparents.  They have always acted younger than their age and always have fun things for us to do when we visit.  They recently sold their side by side 4 wheeler and traded it for this Jeep so they could go jeeping in the canyon and don’t have to haul the 4 wheeler anywhere, they can just head out from home.  They let Garth and I take the kids up Monroe Canyon in the jeep.  It was so beautiful and WAY up there!

Richfield Fun

I think I have pictures of myself that look exactly like these.  City kids with the wrong kind of clothing and great cowboy boots doing the chores with Grandpa Russ.

There were lots of rides given on four wheelers and tractors.  The more the merrier!  Olivia is sitting on a boat seat they attached to the four wheeler so the dog could go on rides with them!

Garth has really been wanting some boots so Grandpa Russ took him out and helped him shop for these beauties.

While we were there, Olivia turned 4!  We had a small celebration with presents and chocolate cake.

Only in Richfield . . . going through the Taco Time drive through on your four wheeler.

Right before we left, Grandpa got out a horse for the kids.  Notice they are still in the wrong kind of clothes, but great boots :)
